One of my favourite films is Electroma by Daft Punk. The pair set out on a journey to become human in their Ferrari 412. The film has no dialogue but is so visually stunning I could post screen grabs all day. Here are four of my favourite shots and below is the song which accompanies the final scene of the movie which I like so much that you are going to have to watch the movie yourself to see it.

I highly recommend watching this film which really gets into the mind and life of THE street style legend, Bill Cunningham. I can't even comprehend having such an active mind and acute eye for the things this guy sees.

Sadly the film never got a UK release but you can watch it online >HERE<. Just be warned you have to mute some crappy adverts which play next to the player once every twenty minutes or so!

Laughing in the face of death

This is David Holley, a guy that is very lucky to be alive...twice! When I met Dave had just had his ear cut off and then sewn back on as part of an operation to replace his ear drum which had been destroyed in an explosion on Guy Fawkes night 5 months earlier..

November the 5th 2010 around 10.30 Lewes;

David was part of the pyrotechnics crew and was setting the fireworks off when a firework blew up in its tube, in turn setting off between 16 and 20 other fireworks on the floor. One of the fireworks hit him like a missile in the back, immediately fracturing 4 ribs and then exploding leaving him knocked to the floor. Now in flames he picked himself up and started running only to pass out shortly after..

(Above: Dave shows me the back of his arm which received a lot of heat and gunpowder marks left by the firework which hit him in the back and also shows me the jacket he was wearing on the night which is now completely obliterated. It looks like a bomb went off on him which is pretty much exactly what happened.)

After being unconscious in the field for 30 minutes Dave was then taken to A+E. His left lung had collapsed due to the explosion and 2 litres of blood had to be drained from it. Surgeons then had to wait for his body to warm up as he was still too cold to operate on at this time. Dave's parents were told that it would only be down to luck if he was to survive the night due to his injuries. After being operated on he was induced into a coma for 36 hours, waking up two days later on a respirator with only one lung functioning. The following 6 days were spent between intensive care and high dependancy units before spending another night on a cardiac ward and finally being released with 6 weeks off work. He left hospital with only one and a third of his lungs working and spent the first 2 or 3 days out of hospital coughing up dried blood from his damaged lung..

Daves chest had to be cut open to be operated on. His breast plate cut in half with a circular saw and prized apart to reveal his lungs, the surgeon compared his damaged lung to 'mash' and described his injuries as 'war like'. You can clearly see the brutal scar leading down the centre of his chest through has tattoo which reads 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'.

His latest scar joins at the bottom almost exactly where a scar which stretches from the middle of his stomach upwards is left from a near fatal car accident when he was much younger. The guy had a smile on his face pretty much the entire time we spent together whilst he was telling me these crazy stories! I guess if I ever had an opportunity to laugh in the face of death I'd take it in an instant aswell...Seize the day!

aside from the new We Are Lucky zine, recently i've bought a couple of other smaller but still more than great mags...

This is a spread from Barry Magazine. Has a great feature on The Dirty Story and is filled with tons of amazing pictures of girls, puking and black eyes from a whole host of great photographers. I really dig the aesthetic of this publication and it only costs £6 with postage. Win!

This is LAW magazine which came in a nice shiny clear plastic cover. The mixed paper switching between matt and semi gloss throughout makes me jealous I havn't made something that feels like this yet. Featuring photographers from London and Brighton with images of footwear collections, butchers and a couple of nice fashion editorials with a direction wholly leaning to a strong sense of true British character - I'm into it. I'm not entirely sure where this mag is stocked as I just came across it in a random book shop and it is limited to 500 copies but they do have a website here >> http://law-mag.co.uk/

Next mags on my wishlist are Self Service magazine and Jacques magazine both of which are nigh on impossible to get hold of!

I should have known better when I first came across this image on a miscellaneous blog with no credits. I loved it at first sight partly because I love sharks and partly because well..it's just pretty damn cool only to later find out it was shot by none other than Terry bloody Richardson! That guy is killing it right now and for your info this is the stunning Lily Donaldson shot for the Aldo SS11 campaign. Check out some more images from the campaign here. The whole thing is real nice looking so hats off to the man.

This magazine is three years in the making featuring 10 photographers who have regularly appeared on the We Are Lucky blog with Valerie Phillips, Dana Goldstein, Tania Shcheglova/Roman Noven to name a few, each of whom I am a very big fan!

It's only a tenner and curated by the highly talented Matt Martin who had a couple of exhibitions in London and Brighton earlier this year.

I'm always jealous of female photographers, three of my favourite photographers are female and the same three were also my inspiration to start pursuing photography in a more serious manner. When it comes to taking pictures, I kind of wish I was a girl.

A guys motives are instantly questioned when taking pictures wether its in a public place or even a set up shoot. People seem to be far more relaxed if it's a female shooting and are a lot more open to a female approaching them in a more spontaneous setting. It's understandable when their are so many cases of guys using a camera for non-professional reasons or generally being bad human beings but I don't think it's purely the reason why people can be a lot more closed off to guys. A female can become more in touch and engaging a lot quicker than a male can in a photographic setting wether the subject is male or female. I think people are generally a lot more wary of guys and don't ease up so quickly. I can totally see why because looking back through history the male has been predominantly an absolute shit and that's the reason I think I'd kind of be better off as a girl.

I visited them last week where they still live in this same house to chill out and sleep in peace. Sat in my favourite place and dangled my feet from the top of Cheddar Gorge about 130 metres up. It felt real good.
